A Mary Christmas
by Kathleen M. Carroll

Although by the title, one would assume this is strictly a Christmas book. But this is a great reflective book anytime of year. The book actually takes the reader through the 7 Joys of Mary.

Each chapter begins with the scripture related to the joy and continues with an easy to follow, easy to read view about Mary that may have never before been thought of. This book does not contain any theological breakthroughs, but this was not the intent. It helps us to come closer to Christ through Mary, relate to her holiness, be inspired by her example and give us reflections that are great for the Christmas season, but will work anytime of year.

At only 94 pages, this book could easily be read in a day, or each of the 7 chapters would be a great read and reflection each day for a week. Why not treat yourself to this book, then pass it along in your Church. How many people could it reach by Christmas?

Being of father of 4 can be difficult, especially when their energy and tiredness is rearing it's head during mass. This book can definitely help.

My kindergartner and first grader love this book, but children of any age could have fun. The pictures lend themselves nicely to be colored, but they also have many activities such as grid drawing, object searches, unscrambling words, mazes, dot-to-dot, number games, crossword puzzles, word searches, matching, and even more!

With 64 pages, it will keep your child engaged for a long time and of course it is all faith based, so it lends to great conversations and stories. And don't worry parents, they even have the answers listed in the back of the book.

Teachers and catechists, the copyright of this book even allows you to photocopy pages to use in your classroom!

by Regis J. Flaherty

This book follows an easy pattern:
-short entertaining or heartfelt story
-points to ponder
-prayer
-discussion questions and action steps

As you can see, this pattern can be used for many things.
- read one chapter a day on your own (conveniently 30 chapters)
- read with a spouse
- use with a youth group/confirmation class

This book is an easy read an has stories that everyone can relate to. Yes, there was even a punk rock/moshing story!

Great easy read, worth your time and money.
Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion
by Father Gregory Boyle

Straight up: This book is a life changer.

We have all either experienced some sort of gang (gang activity) firsthand, or gone out of your way to avoid it. This book is not only an eye opener, it opens the heart, after which it will never be closed.

Fr. Boyle is a modern-day walking saint. Even just through this book, he has changed my life. He has done what so severely needs to be done: humanize gangsters.

He puts a story behind the faces: touching stories, stories of longing for Christ, searching, yearning. I can't tell you how many times I cried throughout this book.

You must read this; buy this for others. Support this man and his ventures.

He takes in gangsters and ex-convicts and gives them jobs and teaches them live skills, how to live, how to love. He treats them as they should be treated...with a father's love.

he has showed them Christ and in the process, showed us what kind of people we need to be.

Fr. Boyle is nationally known and I know one day he will be known everywhere. He is to gangsters what Mother Teresa was to the poor.

God bless you Father Boyle and all those who you touch.
Padre Pio's Spiritual Direction for Every Day
by Gianluigi Pasquale

This treasure trove has a short writing from padre Pio for each day of the year. Each quote is no more than a page, so this book is great for even the busiest of us.

Padre Pio was very connected to suffering and that which damages us the most and offends Christ. Every page feels like I am getting a look into Christ's heart.

For those of you who love quotes, every page is a goldmine. This book could even be a straight read. I know that I didn't want to wait until the next day to gain more insight.
Sinner: (The Catholic Guy's funny, feeble attempts to be a faithful Catholic)
by Lino Rulli

If you don't know who Lino Rulli is (well that's a different topic), then you might find this book a bit of a shock at first. Not that he says anything controversial or against the faith, but just the opposite...he is real. He says the things we may be thinking, but might be to proud to admit. Lino's honesty is refreshing and needed in Catholic literature. (Yes, Lino Rulli has created Catholic literature. St. Rulli, I like the ring of that.)

Sinner guides us through Lino's Catholic spiritual journey. I applaud him not for taking the Protestant "I am a sinner, we are all sinners", but admitting how and why he is a sinner and showing how he is working to be the best Catholic that he can be.

Mr. Rulli (I like the ring of that too) uses his great story telling skills to let you into his life and his mind. At the end of each chapter, he is sure sure to leave you smiling, thinking, and pointed toward the Catholic faith.

This book probably be a fall of your horse like St. Paul type deal, but I love that Lino understands that we must follow God and play our part. Maybe this book just needs to change us a little bit, maybe this book was only written for one person, but this is God's will.

I will finish with a quote from his final chapter, "At the end of my life, I want to be able to say I fought the good fight, I finished the race." And isn't that all that really matters?

If you have SiriusXM Radio, tune into Lino as he hosts The Catholic Guy show.
by Cornelia Mary Bilinsky
Illustrated by Candace Camling

I have to say this is a great pic for a Christmas book.

It addresses the "issue of Santa" carefully. It does not say "Santa is real", but it brings the reader to learn the story of Saint Nicholas.

Before the story there is a beautiful Prayer to Saint Nicholas and after the story there is a brief biography of his life.

I "field tested" this story with my 4 children (ages 4-9) and they said they, "Loved it". Their favorite part was finding out "Santa's Secret". I also tried it on my 2nd grade catechism class and they enjoyed it as well. Win, win everywhere.

Again, a good story. Solid dialogue, easy for a child to understand, and not cheesy.
An Invitation to Rock Your Religion
by David Nantais

David Nantais has managed to do some pretty amazing things in just 184 pages. He speaks of the history of rock, consumerism, social justice, faith, prayer, morality, and so much more.

Let's make this simple. If you are a fan of rock and you have ever wondered or questioned if rock music might be "bad", this is totally your book.

Nantais is a bigger music fan than any of us and he has definitely done his research, thinking, and praying.

A tiny spoiler alert, but I think you need to know this. Nantais does not consider rock evil and he has a very compelling case.
by Chris Padgett

Chris Padgett has long been a person I have looked up to as a father of 9, a strong Catholic, and a fellow musician to name just a few. This was my first chance to read one of his books.

Being 129 pages, this book is not meant to encapsulate everything Mary. But this book does a good job of hitting on many topics such as the Immaculate Conception, Marian apparitions, the Mother of God, the assumption, her virginity, and even protestant oppositions.

This would be a great book for people who are not familiar with many of these topics or people who don't see the need to honor Mary. If you are a big Mary "fan", then you won't find many ground breaking things here, but you will come away with something, which is what learning about our faith is about, right?

I loved the focus near the end of the book about family prayer and rosary. The need to be an example to our family and our children and to help create a foundation of prayer is much needed. Many times practical application is what is missing in books such as this, but Padgett brings it back home on this one.
by Bob Rice

We all know the Bible stories well that are in the novel Between the Savior and the Sea, but do they come to life for us?

Singer, songwriter, speaker, author, and all around awesome Catholic Bob Rice brings the gospels to life through the perspective of Peter. His writing draws us in and helps us see what Peter and other disciples may have been thinking.

The story contains the commissioning of Peter through the Resurrection of Jesus. Each chapter lists Bible verses so that you may read the real stories if you choose.

This book is an easy read and page turner. I feel this would be a great book for an avid pre-teen reader or confirmation student. Not that this is a child's book, but for the fact that it turns the Bible into a compelling story without being "preachy" or feeling like you are being forced to learn.
by Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R.

Let's begin by saying that Fr. Groeschel is an amazing man. He has many followers, my mom included, and I first heard about him through the S.C.R.C. Catholic conference.

I am disappointed to say though, that this book was not for me. Even at being only 159 pages, I did not make it through the entire book. This being said, I am sure many people would enjoy, and could learn and grow from this book.

The back cover of the book does justice to what the book is, "Fr. Benedict Groeschel introduces you to the men and women who have influenced him over the course of his life." But for me, the stories were not intriguing and were a bit lackluster. I did not feel drawn into the stories.

Even as the back of the book states, "Some are unknown, such as Mr. Graff, a Jewish man who tailored the suit the young Groeschel would wear to the seminary: 'Look, I don't understand about monasteries, but I'll give you a piece of advice. Be a good boy." That was the highpoint of that story. It was a 4 page story that ended with him never seeing the man again and about how he will follow that advice.

The premise of the book is a good idea and it is awesome that a man such as this would let us into life and show us how he was shaped. I am sure that Fr. Groeschel fans would appreciate this book and I know that others can draw inspiration from the book, especially those who are interested in the priesthood or following God's will.
by Marcel LeJeune

If you have not heard about or read Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body, then this book is for you. After reading this book, you will see the importance and feel the urge to rush out to the store and find the T of the B. But I have good news fellow nerds, you can just read it online for free here! (thanks to our good friends at EWTN). There is 129 short parts, why not make it a 129 day spiritual pilgrimage?

If you have read the T of the B, then this book won't really tell you anything you don't already know, but it will inspire you in your walk of living a chaste and pure life and give you real life stories of people who were also touched by the Theology.

For those of you who don't know what the Theology of the Body is: it is almost 5 years of Wednesday audiences of Pope John Paul II, from 1979-1884 and it covers, "sex, chastity, married life, celibacy, Trinitarian love, human dignity, the differences between men and women, and our ultimate purpose in life". Who could not use this?

Here are a few of my favorite quotes:
"I recognized in the teaching a call to conversion, and like every call to conversion, there are only two responses, yes and no."
"the body, and it alone, is capable of making visible what is invisible."
"Our sinful nature leads us to want to use others..."
Speaking of men and women: "In their differences they find what the other needs to be complete."
"I am called to die."
"God blessed women with a particular, powerful gift to lead others to him and to be a very reflection of his endless beauty."
"Within every woman is a 'garden enclosed," which deserves to be protected and preserved for only the Bridegroom."
"Women are warriors for life."
It has concise stories that will make you laugh, but bring you right to the heart of the matter. Kyle has a gift for relating great stories and writing great analogies that we can all relate to…i.e. the bathroom.

I think I may have to be a coauthor or contributor to a sequel to this book. This book left me wanting more and there is so much still to be discussed about the bathroom.

Even though this book is only 24 pages including pictures, Kyle was able to bring 7 great chapters and even have discussion and reflection questions at the end of each chapter. There is even a study guide that can accompany the book as well.

Check out this gem, “God has a plan for them and they have chosen a different path. Their path may be interesting and financially rewarding. It may fulfill a worldly notion of success, but it doesn’t bring them joy. They will always have a spot inside them that is uncomfortable and they may be making a mess of things . . . because they are standing at the wrong urinal.”

The puns in the book are awesome, such as the title of Chapter 4 – Where Are You Aiming?

I better not write anymore, or my review will be longer than the book.

Bottom line, the book is awesome, we need to support this great Catholic man and the book can be downloaded in pdf for free.

+ download the whole book (,pdf)

+ download the guide (to start a study group)

You can of course buy copies as well. It does give a few real life examples, but if like me, you were looking for awesome, crazy, mind blowing devil stories, then sadly they are not in this book.

If you feel that you are being tormented or influenced by the devil, this book will guide you. The only downside is that everything is of course a case by case basis, so that means no black and white answers.

Some of the book did seem over-obvious to me, such as the Eucharist and Reconciliation are 2 of our best tools against the devil. But on the other hand, any book that promotes our Most Blessed Eucharist and Reconciliation gets my vote.

Throughout the book, Lozano cites his other book, Unbound: A Catholic Guide to Deliverance. So it appears that book would be more in depth on practice, not just explanation (but I have not read that book).

I do love good devil/exorcism stories, so I wouldn’t be doing my duty if I did not put a plug in for 3 of my favorites An Exorcist Tell His Story and An Exorcist – More Stories, both by Gabriele Amorth and Interview With an Exorcist. Richard W. Gilsdorf

We all know Joseph is the father of Jesus, that he is was Mary’s husband, that he is was a carpenter, that he was a saint. But does your knowledge or reflection end there?

This book, being only 134 pages could be an easy weekend read, or it could be a month long spiritual journey. Either way, this contemplative book works well for someone who knows nothing about St. Joseph, or his biggest devotee.

At the conclusion of each chapter, Fr. Gilsdorf asks a handful of study questions if you want deeper reflection, or even if you had a study group. These are questions that have you looking through issues in your life at home, in society, and diving into the catechism.

I don’t want to give away too much from this book, but a few parts that had me hooked were the discussion of St. Joseph sanctified in the womb, St. Joseph’s Staircase, his role in heaven, and the list of St. Joseph prayers and devotions in the appendix. In the St. Joseph Litany, I learned 2 names for Joseph I instantly fell in love with: Guardian of virgins and Terror of demons. If these are not two things we need, then what are?

This review was written as part of the Catholic book reviewer program from The Catholic Company. Observe:

+ Do you have (or know) a teenager?

+ Are you married or in a relationship?

+ Are you alive?

It doesn’t take a theologian to know that our purity and sexuality is attacked everyday. I love this book because it is straight and to the point. It gives the reader one great quote a day and then asks a different saint to pray for us each day.

This book is not written by some old fogy who is out of touch. Jason Evert is amazing. He is the best speaker on purity that I have ever heard. He has dedicated his life to helping teens be chaste and love their boyfriend/girlfriend, future husband/wife. Jason has given talks to over 100,000 high school and college students internationally. No matter who you are, if you hear him, you will be moved. He practices what he preaches and is a great role model and warrior for the Church. Take a minute to check out YouTube and watch a video or two, you won’t be disappointed.

Parent Tip of the Day: If you teenager won’t read this book, you could easily text or email them the daily quote. Or…write it down and leave it for them on their pillow each day. This could get you back to writing a sweet note for your child each day, so they know you are.

You can find out more about Jason Evert on his website www.chastity.com or request him to speak at your parish/event http://www.catholic.com/seminars/evert.asp.

This review was written as part of the Catholic book Reviewer program from The Catholic Company. As we celebrate All Saints Day, we can help our faith and work on our sainthood by checking out 101 great Catholic speakers at FallibleBlogma. If you are not familiar with the website www.FallibleBlogma.com, (Catholic Social Commentary), that is another story.

Back to the topic at hand; no one would deny that we are in a spiritual battle. With every battle comes warriors. I am not talking about soldiers who just do their jobs and follow orders. I am talking about warriors who go above and beyond their call of duty, men and women who devote their lives for the battle of truth. One such warrior is John “Scripture” Salza (yes, I added scripture, but every good fighter needs a good name).

John Salza is an apologist for the Catholic faith, an author, a lawyer, a speaker, and creator of www.ScriptureCatholic.com. (For a full bio, go to http://www.scripturecatholic.com/john_salza.html.) Scripture Catholic has over 2,000 Scripture citations from the Old and New Testament that explain and defend the teachings of the Catholic Church. It also has hundreds of writings from early Church Fathers that clearly show that the early Church was indeed Catholic.

John has authored 5 books about the Catholic faith, which can seen here. He can be heard on Relevant Radio, on a show called Relevant Answers (hear 52 topics). You can watch YouTube videos where John exposes the evil of Freemasonry. Yes, I said it…fiction, mystery, by a Catholic author. Not only that, but it has a priest (with no mention of molestation)! But not just any priest, a priest with stigmata!

I liked the subtlety of the faith that ran through the pages. It didn’t hit you in the faith or distract from the story, but it came in at the right times. Here is my favorite part:

“As a loving Father, he knows what it is like to lose a son to death, and in the Son, he knows what it is like to be rejected, to be betrayed, to be hurt, to be afraid, to be lonely, and to die. And his suffering Mother has much to teach us about grace in sorrow. When we get to heaven and ask our Lord about suffering, he will perhaps, merely embrace us with his own pierced hands.”

I could tell you more, but why waste the time. Just buy this book, support a Catholic author, and then spread the word of the book to others.

This review was written as part of the Catholic book Reviewer program from The Catholic Company. Possibly my favorite Catholic speaker is Tim Staples. He converted from Protestantism in 1988 and has been on fire ever since. Not just any “on fire”, but the kind of “on fire” that only a good ol’ country boy from the south could be. If you ever get the chance to see him live, or bring him to your church, jump on the opportunity. His energy alone will bring your church alive.

But back to the review. This is an amazing cd set that kept me enthralled the entire time. Tim does a phenomenal job going through death, judgment, heaven, and hell. No matter how much you think you know about these 4 topics, you are bound to learn even more.

The only downside was the recording and cd quality. The recording was a little below par and had times where the audio level went up and down. The cd’s labels were actually stickers, and not printed, so the first disc got stuck in my car cd player because the disc was too thick with the label on it. But don’t worry, I got it out and was able to finish the set without any other worries!

Check out this cd set and other Catholic Answers speakers, you won’t be disappointed.

Rating: (out of 5)

This review was written as part of the Catholic book Reviewer program from The Catholic Company. She led a life that is an inspiration to all Christians. She is the mother of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. She was the one woman that God chose from all time to be the mother of his child.

But Mary has also suffered more than any other human on Earth. Any pain and sorrow that we have felt on this Earth, we can know that Mary endured much worse and did so with great love.

I want to keep this short, so I will lead you to a few places to find out more.

Biblical Explanation and list of the 7 sorrows of Mary

Devotions of Our Lady of Sorrows and awesome graces you receive

Seven Sorrows Catholic Band

Also, feel free to email me with any questions or if you would like more thought on Our Lady to sevensorrows.com at gmail.com

If you ever want the son, remember, the mother can lead you to him.

Our Lady of Sorrows…Pray for us. But for this book, I think simplicity is the key. The Catholic author, John Salza, who is a former Freemason, gives and precise, yet easy to read book about why Freemasonry is wrong.

Yes, I said it, Freemasonry is wrong, a sin. I have known this for years, but was always unable to tell people why except: The Catholic Church is against it, it could cause excommunication. This did not work for my Protestant friends and information was hard to find.

Salza is a lawyer, so he methodically goes through each aspect of why a Christian should not be a Mason. I love a good conspiracy theory, but this book did not stoop to the level of using hearsay or rumors. Salza was a high ranking member, who went from his experiences, and Masonic writings. The book does enlighten the reader on secret rituals, passwords, and handshakes.

Granted, this book is not for you if you do not know any Masons and wouldn’t be able to recognize a Masonic symbol if you saw one. But if you have family members or friends who are Masons, this is a must read!

This review was written as part of the Catholic book Reviewer program from The Catholic Company.
